El Camino’s in Vancouver – tasty Latin American street food

Food at El Camino's (Photo: Rick Chung)It’s been a while since I lived in Mexico, but my quest to find great Latin American food continues.

This week, we stumbled upon El Camino’s – formerly called Latitude – serving up some of the most delicious comida I’ve had since I moved to Vancouver.

On the corner of Main and 16th, this small eatery lined with red booths offers a range of Latin American street food and drinks, all served by friendly bartenders and servers.

Nada como una revoluciĆ³n para curar la sed y el hambre (nothing like a revolution to cure thirst and hunger) is emblazoned on the wall – and they mean it.

In a somewhat revolutionary move for Vancouver, the menu is both cheap and made for sharing, which was great for our group of three on a cheeky mid-week night out.

We quickly worked our way through a selection of $7 arepas, $6 tacos, $7 empanadas, $3 corn chips with salsa roja and free popcorn buttered with lime chili salt.

The servings aren’t too big but everything was delicious. The salsa roja was particularly rich and tasty and we came close to fighting over the last empanada vegetariana.

It’s a great place for drinking too – we downed more than our fair share of margaritas, mojitos, caipirinhas and palomas from the excellent (and strong) cocktail menu.

After a great night out there, we all agreed – the name change was a top idea and a return trip to El Camino’s is essential!
