About Me
My name is Jenni Sheppard and I'm a freelance writer and editor. I was born in the UK, but I have lived in Vancouver, Canada since 2011.
For 10 years, I worked in media, beginning my career in the BBC newsroom as a broadcast assistant to the user-generated content desk in 2009.
I went on to fill many different digital positions at the BBC, including broadcast journalist, content producer, and video journalist.
In 2011, after moving to Canada, I joined the CBC as a casual online writer. I also covered the roles of web editor, web video editor, and web copy editor.
At the CBC, I was nominated for the Grierson Mentor Award for my work sharing digital skills with colleagues across the newsroom. I was also part of two CBC news teams honoured with awards from the RTDNA.
I also joined the TV team at the CBC, becoming a senior writer and script producer for News Now with Ian Hanomansing.
In 2016, I joined Daily Hive as a staff writer, where I was promoted to senior staff writer and led major projects, including BC election coverage.
After two years, I launched my own business, to provide freelance writing and proofreading services.
During the pandemic, looking for stability, I pivoted into the role of Partnerships Coordinator at Michael Smith Health Research BC.
I left this position in 2023, to continue moving forward with writing, editing and communications roles.
Author
I am also the author of JENNY GETS LOST IN PARIS, a children's book that I am currently querying with agents. I am an active member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and hope to build a career as a published author over the coming years.
Traveller
Travelling has been a huge part of my life, from the moment I got my first atlas of the world as a child.
I would sit spellbound, reading about different countries, people, and cultures, imagining all the far flung places I could go.
Since then, I have travelled to more than 42 countries in Europe, Africa, the Americas, Australia, and Asia.
I have also lived in Spain, Mexico, Togo, Slovenia, Belgium, and now, Canada.
Runner
I may not be the fastest, but I love getting out of the house and running around my neighbourhood - or wherever I happen to be!
I also love taking part in races and have run half marathons in Brussels, Paris, Manchester, and Victoria, BC.
I am back training again and am aiming for another half marathon this year.
Cheese Maker
A few years ago, I was in a home brew store when I came across a recipe book for making cheese at home. I gave it a go, and I am hooked!
I now make a range of soft and hard cheeses in my own kitchen for friends and colleagues.
My favourites are cheddar, brie, and queso fresco with chillies!
