Why I want to write more honestly

One of the 101 things I’m trying to achieve in 1001 days is writing more honestly, combined with writing about equality, movies and Vancouver. I’ve been feeling the urge to do this for a long time, but it may seem a strange goal, especially if you don’t write for a living.

My experience working in public service broadcasting for several years has definitely informed this goal.

Writing for organizations with a mandate to provide fair and balanced coverage requires a lot of deliberation, consideration and scrutiny. That doesn’t leave much room for opinion, telling it like it is or sharing personal experiences.

Which is a shame, as I think that honest approach is a highly valued commodity today. The online community values frank honesty, raw experience and authentic thought.

An example of this is Quora, an online Q & A closed community my partner is always talking about. Users put questions to the community and answers flood in, readable only by members. It elicits surprisingly probing, personal questions – and surprisingly insightful, honest answers.

Some examples of questions and answers this week include “What was the hardest thing you went through in life and how did you get past that?”, “What does it feel like to have a loaded gun pointed at you in anger?” and “What is the weirdest or most disturbing thing that a kid has said to you?

It’s fascinating stuff, sometimes uplifting, sometime shocking, but usually intelligent, considered and honest – and crucially, worth reading.

And I admire people who can write more openly. I’ve been inspired by friend Claire Jones, who recently quit her job and turned to blogging to share the positive changes she is making in her life. She writes personally and honestly, and I think it makes a compelling read.

I think raw opinions, experiences and theories are so powerful because they emphasise our shared human experience, in a world which seems ever more divided and full of political spin. Ultimately we’re all just trying to figure out what it all means, so why not turn to each other?

Another reason why this kind of writing might be so valued is that being honest, putting an opinion out there, revealing your inner life, is not without risk. It exposes you to criticism and online that criticism can be particularly offensive and threatening. Understandably, people feel reluctant to go there, but I think they appreciate it when others do.

So sure, writing more openly myself, on issues I feel passionate about and the changes I’m making in my life, will sometimes be hard. But I think it’s better to speak out and like all the things on my list of 101 goals, I’m taking up the challenge.

And hopefully, it will mean you can share my journey as I work my way towards those goals. At the very least, you’ll have something the disagree with – at the most, I hope it will be interesting reading…and writing.
